Why don't we support women making whatever choices that they find empowering?
We are not "choice feminists." The entire premise of celebrating any choice at all, so long as it is made by a woman is innately demeaning, as it implies it's some sort of accomplishment for a woman to make a decision of any sort, and that her decisions carry no moral weight, like those of someone of extremely diminished capacity. Women are fully human; we are not naturally going to make only good choices. Everyone makes mistakes, which means not every choice is a cause for celebration.
Consider this: will you celebrate your friend's choice to drive drunk? Run up a million dollars in gambling debts? Harm other people? Are bad decisions made good if a woman making them? Obviously not. Ipso facto, we do not need to celebrate women simply making choices. Just like we critique the behaviors of men, we can critique the behaviors of women. If a woman engages in a behavior that harms herself or other people, that is not cause for celebration.
Also, this question, which we get a lot, makes it sound like we don't want women to make any choices. We want women to make GOOD choices, and that requires being informed about all the effects that choices have. Smoking cigarettes can help people maintain a healthy weight, but overall, it's a poor choice to smoke. Knowing the full cost of smoking means that we can assess whether it's a good idea to smoke or not. The same goes for other choices, including those related to feminine performance.
